الأمنيات والندم: wish وif only

Wishes and regrets: wish and if only

تحدّث عن أشياء تتمنى أن تكون مختلفة الآن، وعن الندم على الماضي، وعن العادات التي تزعجك.

نستخدم wish وif only للحديث عن مواقف غير حقيقية أو لا يمكننا تغييرها. وكما في الجمل الشرطية، نُرجع الفعل خطوة واحدة إلى الوراء في الزمن لنُظهر البعد عن الواقع. وif only أقوى وأكثر عاطفية من I wish.

تُستخدم Wish + would للشكوى من شيء نريد من شخص آخر أن يغيّره، أو لإظهار نفاد الصبر: I wish it would stop raining! ولا نستخدمها عادةً عن أنفسنا. قل I wish I could أو I wish I were، وليس I wish I would.

  • If only we had more time!
  • If only I hadn't said that. Now she's upset.
  • Do you ever wish you had chosen a different career?
  • I wish you wouldn't leave your shoes in the hall.

hope أم wish؟

استخدم hope للأشياء الممكنة التي قد تحدث: I hope you pass the exam. واستخدم wish للأشياء غير الحقيقية. وللتمنيات الطيبة، يتبع wish شخص ثم اسم: We wish you a happy birthday.
