願望と後悔：wish と if only

Wishes and regrets: wish and if only

今とは違っていてほしいこと、過去についての後悔、いらだたしい習慣について話します。

wish と if only は、現実ではない状況や、変えられない状況について話すときに使います。条件文と同じく、現実との距離を示すために、動詞を1つ前の時制にずらします。If only は I wish よりも強く、感情がこもっています。

何についての願望か構造例意味

Wish + would は、ほかの人に変わってほしいことへの不満や、いらだちを表すときに使います。I wish it would stop raining! 自分自身については、通常使いません。I wish I would ではなく、I wish I could や I wish I were と言います。

  • If only we had more time!
  • If only I hadn't said that. Now she's upset.
  • Do you ever wish you had chosen a different career?
  • I wish you wouldn't leave your shoes in the hall.

hope と wish の違いは？

実現しうることや、起こるかもしれないことには hope を使います。I hope you pass the exam. 現実ではないことには wish を使います。祝福の気持ちを表すときは、wish の後ろに人と名詞が続きます。We wish you a happy birthday.
