Desideri e rimpianti: wish e if only
Wishes and regrets: wish and if only
| Wish riguardo a | Struttura | Esempio | Significato |
|---|---|---|---|
| the present | wish + past simple or continuous | I wish I lived nearer the sea. | I don't live near the sea. |
| the present (be) | wish + were / was | Mira wishes she were taller. | She isn't tall. |
| ability | wish + could | I wish I could play the violin. | I can't play it. |
| the past | wish + past perfect | He wishes he had studied harder. | He didn't study hard. It's a regret. |
| other people's habits | wish + would | I wish my neighbours would turn their music down. | They don't, and it annoys me. |
I wish it would stop raining! Di' I wish I could o I wish I were, non I wish I would.
- If only we had more time!
- If only I hadn't said that. Now she's upset.
- Do you ever wish you had chosen a different career?
- I wish you wouldn't leave your shoes in the hall.
Hope o wish?
Usa hope per cose possibili che possono accadere: I hope you pass the exam. We wish you a happy birthday.
