Wishes and regrets: wish and if only

Bicarakan hal yang ingin kamu ubah sekarang, penyesalan tentang masa lalu, dan kebiasaan yang mengganggumu.

Kita memakai wish dan if only untuk membicarakan situasi yang tidak nyata atau yang tidak bisa kita ubah. Seperti pada conditional, kita memundurkan kata kerja satu langkah dalam waktu untuk menunjukkan jarak dari kenyataan. If only lebih kuat dan lebih emosional daripada I wish.

Wish + would dipakai untuk mengeluhkan sesuatu yang kita ingin orang lain ubah, atau untuk menunjukkan ketidaksabaran: I wish it would stop raining! Kita biasanya tidak memakainya untuk diri sendiri. Katakan I wish I could atau I wish I were, bukan I wish I would.

  • If only we had more time!
  • If only I hadn't said that. Now she's upset.
  • Do you ever wish you had chosen a different career?
  • I wish you wouldn't leave your shoes in the hall.

Hope atau wish?

Pakai hope untuk hal yang mungkin dan bisa terjadi: I hope you pass the exam. Pakai wish untuk hal yang tidak nyata. Untuk ucapan selamat, wish diikuti orang dan kata benda: We wish you a happy birthday.
