الشرط الثالث والشرط المختلط
Third and mixed conditionals
تخيّل ماضيًا مختلفًا، واربط أحداث الماضي بنتائج في الحاضر.
الشرط الثالث (third conditional) يتخيل ماضيًا مختلفًا. ولأن الماضي لا يتغير، نستخدمه غالبًا للتعبير عن الندم أو النقد أو الارتياح. أما الشروط المختلطة (Mixed conditionals) فتجمع بين إطارين زمنيين: شرط ماضٍ متخيَّل مع نتيجة في الحاضر، أو موقف حاضر متخيَّل مع نتيجة في الماضي.

في المثال الأول، فاتنا القطار. وفي الثاني، لم يقبل Tomás الوظيفة، ولهذا الأمر نتيجة لا تزال قائمة اليوم: هو ليس في Toronto. وفي الثالث، صفة دائمة (I'm not very organised) تفسّر شيئًا سار بشكل خاطئ في الماضي.
أفعال مساعدة أخرى والصيغ المختصرة
يمكنك استبدال would بـ could أو might للحديث عن القدرة أو الاحتمال. وفي الكلام تُختصر had وwould كلتاهما إلى 'd، لذا استمع بعناية: If I'd known, I'd have helped. الـ 'd الأولى هي had والثانية هي would.
- If Amara hadn't reminded me, I might have missed my appointment.
- We could have won if our goalkeeper hadn't been ill.
- If Daniel spoke Portuguese, he would have understood the guide.
- If I hadn't stayed up so late, I wouldn't feel so tired now.
