Periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo e misto
Third and mixed conditionals
| Tipo | Proposizione con if | Proposizione principale | Esempio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third | if + past perfect | would have + past participle | If we had left earlier, we would have caught the train. |
| Mixed: past to present | if + past perfect | would + verb | If Tomás had taken the job, he would be in Toronto now. |
| Mixed: present to past | if + past simple | would have + past participle | If I were more organised, I wouldn't have forgotten the meeting. |
Altri verbi modali e forme contratte
Puoi sostituire would con could o might per parlare di capacità o possibilità. Nel parlato, had e would si contraggono entrambi in 'd, quindi ascolta con attenzione: If I'd known, I'd have helped. Il primo 'd è had; il secondo è would.
- If Amara hadn't reminded me, I might have missed my appointment.
- We could have won if our goalkeeper hadn't been ill.
- If Daniel spoke Portuguese, he would have understood the guide.
- If I hadn't stayed up so late, I wouldn't feel so tired now.
