Past perfect simple and continuous

แสดงว่าเหตุการณ์ในอดีตใดเกิดก่อน และพูดถึงกิจกรรมที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ก่อนช่วงเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต

เมื่อเล่าเรื่องในอดีต บางครั้งเราต้องย้อนไปไกลกว่านั้น past perfect แสดงว่าการกระทำหนึ่งเกิดก่อนอีกการกระทำหนึ่งในอดีต หรือก่อนเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต

รูปแบบโครงสร้างจุดเน้นและตัวอย่าง
Past perfect simplehad + past participleA completed action or result: When we arrived, the film had already started.
Past perfect continuoushad been + -ingAn activity in progress, or how long it lasted: Ines had been waiting for an hour when the bus came.
Negativehadn't + past participle / hadn't been + -ingI hadn't met him before the wedding.

เปรียบเทียบสองรูป She had painted the room บอกเราว่างานเสร็จแล้ว She had been painting the room เน้นที่กิจกรรม มักใช้อธิบายสิ่งที่เราสังเกตเห็น คือมีสีเปื้อนเสื้อผ้าของเธอ เรามักใช้รูป continuous กับ for และ since เพื่อแสดงระยะเวลา

จำเป็นเสมอไปหรือไม่

หากลำดับเหตุการณ์ชัดเจนอยู่แล้ว เช่น มี before หรือ after มักใช้ past simple ก็เพียงพอ: After she locked the door, she went to bed. แต่กับ when การเลือกกาลจะเปลี่ยนความหมาย

  • When I got to the platform, the train left. (I saw it leave.)
  • When I got to the platform, the train had left. (It was already gone.)
  • Yusuf was exhausted because he had been studying all night.
  • By the time the guests arrived, we had prepared everything.
  • The streets were wet. It had been raining.
