간접화법
Reported speech
다른 사람의 진술, 질문, 요청을 전달하고 시제가 언제 바뀌는지 알아봅니다.
나중에 누군가의 말을 전할 때는 보통 say, tell, ask 같은 전달 동사를 사용합니다. 전달 동사가 과거형이면 전달되는 절의 동사는 시간상 한 단계 뒤로 가는 경우가 많습니다.

대명사와 시간 표현도 새로운 상황에 맞게 바뀝니다: today는 that day, tomorrow는 the next day 또는 the following day, here는 there, ago는 before가 됩니다.
Say, tell, ask
Tell은 목적어로 사람이 필요하지만 say는 그렇지 않습니다. 간접 의문문은 평서문의 어순을 쓰고 물음표를 쓰지 않습니다. yes/no 의문문에는 if 또는 whether를 사용합니다. 요청과 명령을 전달하려면 ask 또는 tell + 사람 + to + 동사원형을 사용합니다.
- Mateo told me (that) he was moving to Chile.
- Mateo said (that) he was moving to Chile.
- She asked me where I lived.
- He asked if I had a pen.
- The coach told us not to be late.
