Reported speech

Laporkan pernyataan, pertanyaan, dan permintaan orang lain, dan ketahui kapan tense berubah.

Ketika kita melaporkan perkataan seseorang di kemudian hari, kita biasanya memakai kata kerja pelapor seperti say, tell, atau ask. Jika kata kerja pelapor dalam bentuk lampau, kata kerja dalam klausa yang dilaporkan sering mundur satu langkah dalam waktu.

Pronomina dan kata waktu juga berubah menyesuaikan situasi baru: today menjadi that day, tomorrow menjadi the next day atau the following day, here menjadi there, dan ago menjadi before.

Say, tell, dan ask

Tell membutuhkan orang sebagai objeknya; say tidak. Pertanyaan yang dilaporkan memakai urutan kata kalimat pernyataan biasa dan tanpa tanda tanya. Pakai if atau whether untuk pertanyaan ya/tidak. Untuk melaporkan permintaan dan perintah, pakai ask atau tell + orang + to + infinitive.

  • Mateo told me (that) he was moving to Chile.
  • Mateo said (that) he was moving to Chile.
  • She asked me where I lived.
  • He asked if I had a pen.
  • The coach told us not to be late.
