Anteposición para enfatizar y para la concesión

Fronting for emphasis and concession

Mueve palabras al principio para enfatizar, y expresa la concesión con formas como Strange as it may seem.

Normalmente el inglés pone primero el sujeto, pero los buenos escritores anteponen (front) un elemento, es decir, lo colocan al principio de la oración, para crear énfasis, contraste o un enlace fluido con la oración anterior. Algunas estructuras con anteposición necesitan inversion, y otras no.

EstructuraEstructuraEjemplo
Fronted place or direction + motion verbadverbial + verb + subjectDown the lane rolled the old cart.
Fronted complementcomplement + be + subjectKey to the plan is the support of the staff.
Fixed fronted phrasesgone / here / there + verbGone are the days of easy credit.
Concession with adjective, adverb or verbadjective + as / though + subject + verbStrange as it may seem, the quietest room was the busiest.
Concession with much / trymuch as; try as + subject + mightTry as he might, he could not open the lid.
Emphatic auxiliarysubject + do / does / did + base verbShe does deserve the prize.
Fronted object for contrastobject + subject + verbThat I cannot accept.

En la concessive fronting (anteposición concesiva), el adjetivo, el adverbio o el verbo va primero y le sigue as o though, nunca although: Hard though it was, Kofi admitted the mistake. Con much, decimos Much as I admire her courage, I cannot support the plan. La inversión con be también aparece después de complementos antepuestos: Also important is the cost of training.

  • Up the steps ran the children, laughing loudly.
  • Here comes the bus at last!
  • Brave as the rescuers were, they could not enter the tunnel.
  • Not a single word of apology did she offer.
  • I rarely praise anyone, but Aiko really does deserve it.
