強調と譲歩のための前置
Fronting for emphasis and concession
強調するために語を文頭に移し、Strange as it may seem のような形で譲歩を表しましょう。
英語は通常、主語を最初に置きますが、熟達した書き手は、強調、対比、前の文との滑らかなつながりを生むために、ある要素を文頭に置く(front(前置する))ことがあります。前置された構文にはinversion(倒置)が必要なものと、そうでないものがあります。
| 構造 | パターン | 例 |
|---|---|---|
| Fronted place or direction + motion verb | adverbial + verb + subject | Down the lane rolled the old cart. |
| Fronted complement | complement + be + subject | Key to the plan is the support of the staff. |
| Fixed fronted phrases | gone / here / there + verb | Gone are the days of easy credit. |
| Concession with adjective, adverb or verb | adjective + as / though + subject + verb | Strange as it may seem, the quietest room was the busiest. |
| Concession with much / try | much as; try as + subject + might | Try as he might, he could not open the lid. |
| Emphatic auxiliary | subject + do / does / did + base verb | She does deserve the prize. |
| Fronted object for contrast | object + subject + verb | That I cannot accept. |
concessive fronting(譲歩の前置)では、形容詞、副詞、動詞が先頭に来て、その後にasまたはthoughが続きます。although は決して使いません:Hard though it was, Kofi admitted the mistake. muchの場合は、Much as I admire her courage, I cannot support the plan. と言います。beを使った倒置は、前置された補語の後にも現れます:Also important is the cost of training.
- Up the steps ran the children, laughing loudly.
- Here comes the bus at last!
- Brave as the rescuers were, they could not enter the tunnel.
- Not a single word of apology did she offer.
- I rarely praise anyone, but Aiko really does deserve it.
