Cleft sentences for emphasis
استخدم الجمل الانشطارية بـ it وبـ what للتركيز على أهم جزء في الجملة.
تقسّم الجملة الانشطارية (cleft sentence) الفكرة الواحدة إلى جملتين ليحظى أحد الجزأين باهتمام خاص. يمكن إعادة تشكيل الجملة المحايدة Tariq broke the news للتشديد على من فعل ذلك أو على ما حدث. وتشيع الجمل الانشطارية في الخطب والمقالات والحوار المتأنّي، إذ تساعدك على توجيه المستمع نحو فكرتك الرئيسة.

في الجملة الانشطارية بـ it يمكن أن يكون العنصر المركَّز عليه شخصًا أو شيئًا أو زمنًا أو مكانًا، ويتبعه that (أو who للأشخاص). أما مع تعبيرات الزمن فتفضّل الإنجليزية that بقوة: It was not until the third interview that she mentioned the salary. وفي الجملة الانشطارية بـ what تعني what «الشيء الذي»، ويربط الفعل be بين الجزأين. وعندما يكون التركيز على عبارة فعلية فعادةً ما تُقدَّم بـ to أو بمصدر مجرد: What I'd like to do is (to) take a year off.
وصف الأحداث
لسرد تسلسل الأحداث بإثارة وتشويق استخدم What happened was (that) ... أو What happened next was .... وكثيرًا ما تُحذف الكلمة that في الكلام، لكنها مفيدة في الكتابة.
- It is your attitude, not your ability, that concerns me.
- What happened next was that the funding was withdrawn.
- What we did was book the tickets before they sold out.
- It was not Mina's apology but her honesty that impressed us.
