담화에서의 생략과 대용

Ellipsis and substitution in discourse

so, not, one, do so, 축약절로 반복을 피하고, 어떤 생략이 자연스럽게 들리는지 알아 둡니다.

유창하게 말하고 쓰는 사람은 듣는 사람이 쉽게 보충할 수 있는 단어의 반복을 피합니다. Ellipsis(생략)는 단어를 빼는 것입니다. Substitution(대용)은 so, not, one, do so, the same 같은 짧은 형태로 바꾸는 것입니다. 두 방법 모두 글의 응집성을 높이지만, 생략할 수 있는 단어는 정해져 있습니다.

Neither did I, Nor did I, So did I의 차이에 주의하세요. 앞의 둘은 부정문 뒤에, 마지막은 긍정문 뒤에 옵니다. than 뒤에서는 축약형(than expected)과 완전한 형태(than was expected) 모두 맞지만, 격식 있는 글에서는 축약절이 더 흔합니다.

  • Will the funding be approved? If not, we shall cancel the trip.
  • Some students took notes by hand and others typed them.
  • The committee has not met, nor is it expected to before May.
  • I wanted to attend but wasn't able to.
  • When asked about the delay, the manager said she had not been told.
