비현실적 과거형과 도치 조건문
Unreal past forms and inverted conditionals
현재나 미래의 비현실을 나타내는 과거형을 사용하고, should, were, had를 도치하여 if를 생략합니다.
영어는 past forms to talk about things that are not real now, 즉 지금 현실이 아닌 일을 말할 때 과거형을 씁니다. 이 '비현실적 과거'는 it's time, would rather, as if, suppose, wish 뒤에 나타납니다. 격식 있는 글에서는 if를 생략하고 첫 번째 동사를 도치하여 조건문을 줄이기도 합니다.
| 구조 | 패턴 | 예 |
|---|---|---|
| It's (high / about) time | + subject + past simple | It's high time the council repaired the road. |
| would rather / sooner | + subject + past simple (now or future) | I'd rather you kept the windows closed. |
| would rather | + subject + past perfect (past) | I'd rather you hadn't told anyone. |
| as if / as though | + past perfect for past unreality | She spoke as if she had led the project. |
| suppose / supposing | + past simple for a hypothetical case | Suppose you were given the chance, what would you do? |
| but for / were it not for / had it not been for | + noun phrase | But for his help, I would have failed. |
| Should / Were / Had + subject | replaces if | Had we known, we would have called. |
세 가지 도치 형태는 각각 한 유형의 조건문에서 if를 대신합니다. Should + subject(Should you need help, ask)는 정중하거나 가능성이 낮은 경우를 나타내는 if you should need를 대신합니다. Were + subject (+ to)(Were she to accept, she would move)는 if she were to accept를 대신합니다. Had + subject + past participle(Had it not been for the warning, many would have suffered)는 if it had not been for를 대신합니다.
