Exam skills: key word transformation and paraphrase
Independent practice in advanced exam skills, not an official test: rewrite sentences with a given key word, then choose the closest paraphrase of subtle, idiomatic sentences.
A key word transformation asks you to complete a second sentence so that it means the same as the first, using the key word in capitals. The key word must be used in the answer, and you usually need two to five words in the gap. At this level the sentences test fixed phrases, inversion, concession and passive structures, and a small change of grammar or meaning makes an answer wrong.
| Pattern | Example transformation |
|---|---|
| Negative inversion | She had barely sat down when the phone rang. / Hardly had she sat down when the phone rang. |
| Concession with much as | Although I admire him greatly... / Much as I admire him... |
| Reporting structures | People say the owner is abroad. / The owner is said to be abroad. |
| Fixed phrase | to a large extent / by and large / in effect |
