ภาษาอังกฤษมีระบบ subjunctive ที่เล็กแต่สำคัญ พบในงานเขียนทางการ กฎระเบียบ และสำนวนตายตัว และบอกว่าสิ่งนั้นถูกเรียกร้อง ถูกแนะนำ เป็นเพียงสมมติ หรือไม่เป็นจริง ผู้เรียนมักสังเกตได้เพราะกริยาคงอยู่ในรูป base form แม้หลัง he, she หรือ it: that every pupil be silent, that she arrive on time

ในภาษาอังกฤษแบบอังกฤษ มักได้ยิน should แทน base form: It is essential that the patient should remain calm. ทั้งสองแบบถูกต้อง และผู้พูดหลายคนใช้ present tense ธรรมดาด้วย แต่ในงานเขียนทางการและข้อสอบ base form ปลอดภัยที่สุด หลัง would rather และ it's time ใช้ past simple ที่มีความหมายปัจจุบันหรืออนาคต ไม่ใช่อดีต: I'd rather you left now หมายความว่าอยากให้คุณไปตอนนี้
- The committee requested that the report be submitted by noon.
- Far be it from me to criticise, but the plan has flaws.
- If it were not for her support, I would not be here today.
