ในประโยค active ประธานเป็นผู้ทำการกระทำ: Farmers grow rice in this valley. ในประโยค passive ประธานเป็นผู้รับการกระทำ: Rice is grown in this valley. เราใช้ passive เมื่อไม่รู้ว่าใครเป็นผู้ทำ เมื่อเป็นที่รู้กันอยู่แล้ว หรือเมื่อไม่สำคัญ

หากต้องการบอกว่าใครเป็นผู้ทำ ให้ใช้ by: The song was written by a teenager from Nairobi. ให้เติม by + บุคคล เฉพาะเมื่อข้อมูลนี้ใหม่หรือน่าสนใจ ประโยคอย่าง My bag was found by someone ฟังดูแปลก เพราะ someone ไม่ได้เพิ่มข้อมูลอะไร
