The passive: present and past
행위나 결과가 그 일을 하는 사람보다 더 중요할 때 수동태를 사용합니다.
능동태 문장에서는 주어가 행동을 합니다: Farmers grow rice in this valley. 수동태 문장에서는 주어가 행동을 받습니다: Rice is grown in this valley. 누가 했는지 모를 때, 뻔할 때, 또는 중요하지 않을 때 수동태를 사용합니다.

행위자를 말하려면 by를 사용합니다: The song was written by a teenager from Nairobi. by + 사람은 그 정보가 새롭거나 흥미로울 때만 덧붙입니다. My bag was found by someone 같은 문장은 어색합니다. someone은 아무 정보도 더해 주지 않기 때문입니다.
자주 볼 수 있는 곳
수동태는 뉴스, 공지, 설명서, 과정 설명에서 흔히 쓰입니다. 글쓴이가 일어난 일과 그 결과에 초점을 맞추도록 도와줍니다.
- Breakfast is served from 7 to 10 a.m.
- Three new kinds of frog were discovered in the forest last year.
- Our flat is cleaned every Friday.
- The match was cancelled because of the storm.
- Was the email sent to everyone?
