Relative clauses: who, which, that, where
한 문장 안에서 생각을 연결하고 사람, 사물, 장소에 대한 정보를 더 알려 줍니다.
관계절은 명사에 대한 정보를 알려 줍니다. 명사 바로 뒤에 오며 짧은 두 문장을 한 문장으로 연결해 줍니다: I have a friend. She speaks five languages.는 I have a friend who speaks five languages.가 됩니다.

이런 문장에서 관계절은 어떤 사람, 사물, 장소를 가리키는지 정확히 알려 줍니다. 이를 한정적 관계절이라고 하며 쉼표를 쓰지 않습니다.
관계사를 생략할 수 있을까요?
who, which, that이 절의 목적어일 때(그 뒤에 다른 주어가 올 때)는 생략할 수 있습니다. 절의 주어일 때는 반드시 써야 합니다. 절이 추가 정보만 더할 때는 쉼표 사이에 넣으며, 이때는 that을 쓸 수 없습니다.
- The film (that) we watched last night was very long. (object: you can leave it out)
- The man who called you is waiting outside. (subject: it must stay)
- This is the town where my grandmother grew up.
- Kofi, who works at the hospital, is very busy this week. (extra information, with commas)
