Unreal past forms and inverted conditionals

Pakai bentuk lampau untuk ketidaknyataan masa kini atau masa depan, dan hilangkan if dengan membalik should, were, dan had.

Bahasa Inggris memakai past forms to talk about things that are not real now, yaitu bentuk lampau untuk membicarakan hal yang tidak nyata sekarang. "Lampau tidak nyata" ini muncul setelah it's time, would rather, as if, suppose dan wish. Tulisan formal juga meringkas kondisional dengan menghilangkan if dan membalik kata kerja pertama.

Tiga bentuk terbalik masing-masing menggantikan if dalam satu jenis kondisional. Should + subject (Should you need help, ask) menggantikan if you should need, kemungkinan yang sopan atau kecil. Were + subject (+ to) (Were she to accept, she would move) menggantikan if she were to accept. Had + subject + past participle (Had it not been for the warning, many would have suffered) menggantikan if it had not been for.

  • It's about time we started thinking about a long-term solution.
  • I'd sooner you didn't mention it to anyone.
  • Were it not for his constant encouragement, I would have given up long ago.
  • Should the printer fail again, call the technician.
