B1Kata kerja modal15 menit
Kewajiban dan saran: must, have to, should
Obligation and advice: must, have to, should
Sebutkan apa yang perlu dilakukan, apa yang tidak perlu, apa yang tidak boleh, dan apa yang merupakan ide bagus.
Must, have to, dan should semuanya diletakkan sebelum bentuk dasar kata kerja. Ketiganya menunjukkan seberapa kuat suatu kewajiban atau saran. Setelah must dan should, kita tidak pernah memakai to.
| Bentuk | Arti | Contoh |
|---|---|---|
| must | strong obligation, often the speaker's own feeling, or a written rule | I must call my mum tonight. It's her birthday. |
| have to / has to | obligation from outside: rules, laws, timetables, jobs | Nurses have to work at night sometimes. |
| mustn't | it is not allowed, so don't do it | You mustn't use your phone during the exam. |
| don't have to | it isn't necessary, but you can if you want | You don't have to bring food. Lunch is included. |
| should / shouldn't | advice: a good or bad idea | You should try the soup. It's delicious. |
Must tidak punya bentuk lampau atau masa depan, jadi kita memakai have to untuk waktu lain: I had to wait for an hour yesterday. We'll have to leave early tomorrow. Pertanyaan dan kalimat negatif dengan have to membutuhkan do, does, atau did: Do you have to wear a uniform?
Mustn't atau don't have to?
Keduanya terlihat mirip, tetapi artinya sangat berbeda. Mustn't berarti sesuatu tidak diperbolehkan. Don't have to berarti tidak ada kewajiban: kamu boleh memilih.
- You mustn't swim here. The water is dangerous.
- You don't have to swim if you're tired. You can sit on the beach.
- Aiko has to get up at 5 a.m. because her shift starts at six.
- You should drink more water when it's hot.
- We didn't have to pay for the concert. It was free.
