생략과 대용

Ellipsis and substitution

so, not, do so, one/ones, 축약된 부정사, 조동사만 쓰는 대답으로 반복을 피합니다.

유창한 화자는 듣는 사람이 이미 알고 있는 단어를 좀처럼 반복하지 않습니다. Ellipsis(생략)는 단어를 빼는 것이고, substitution(대용)은 so, not, one or do 같은 짧은 단어로 바꾸는 것입니다. 둘 다 말과 글을 더 자연스럽게 하지만, 의미가 분명하도록 충분한 정보는 남겨 두어야 합니다.

think, believe, suppose, expect에는 부정 형태가 두 가지 있습니다. I don't think so가 I think not보다 더 흔하며, I hope not과 I'm afraid not에는 다른 형태가 없습니다. 비교 표현에서 일부를 생략할 때는 조동사를 남기세요. Her first novel sold far better than her second did. 여기서 did는 반복되는 동사 sold를 대신하고, second 뒤의 novel은 생략됩니다.

  • These shoes are too small. Do you have a bigger pair, or one in black?
  • She promised to call, but she didn't, and I didn't expect her to.
  • Will the museum be open on Sunday? I don't think so.
  • She can play the piano, and her sister can too.
