Ellipsis and substitution
Hindari pengulangan dengan so, not, do so, one/ones, infinitif yang diringkas, dan jawaban yang hanya berupa kata kerja bantu.
Penutur yang fasih jarang mengulang kata yang sudah diketahui pendengar. Ellipsis berarti menghilangkan kata, dan substitution berarti menggantinya dengan kata pendek seperti so, not, one or do. Keduanya membuat ujaran dan tulisan terdengar lebih alami, tetapi kamu harus tetap menyisakan informasi yang cukup agar maknanya jelas.

Dengan think, believe, suppose, dan expect, ada dua bentuk negatif: I don't think so lebih umum daripada I think not, sedangkan I hope not dan I'm afraid not tidak punya alternatif. Saat menghilangkan sebagian perbandingan, pertahankan kata kerja bantunya: Her first novel sold far better than her second did. Di sini did menggantikan kata kerja sold yang berulang, dan novel dihilangkan setelah second.
- These shoes are too small. Do you have a bigger pair, or one in black?
- She promised to call, but she didn't, and I didn't expect her to.
- Will the museum be open on Sunday? I don't think so.
- She can play the piano, and her sister can too.
