First e second conditional

First and second conditionals

Parla di possibilità reali nel futuro e di situazioni immaginarie nel presente.

Una frase condizionale ha due parti: l'if-clause (la condizione) e la main clause (il risultato). I tempi che scegliamo mostrano quanto la situazione è reale o probabile.

TipoFormaEsempioSignificato
First conditionalif + present simple, will / won't + verbIf it rains tomorrow, we'll stay at home.Rain is a real possibility.
Second conditionalif + past simple, would / wouldn't + verbIf I had a garden, I'd grow tomatoes.I don't have a garden. This is imaginary.

Nel second conditional, la forma del passato non indica un tempo passato. Mostra distanza dalla realtà. Con be, spesso usiamo were con ogni persona, soprattutto nell'inglese curato. If I were you, I would... è un modo comune per dare consigli. If I was è comune anche nel parlato quotidiano.

Confronta: If I get the job, I'll move to Lisbon. (Ho fatto un colloquio, quindi è possibile.) If I got a job in Lisbon, I'd move there. (Non ne sto cercando uno. È solo un'idea.)

L'if-clause può venire prima o dopo. Usa la virgola quando viene prima. Puoi usare unless con il significato di if not, e might o could nella main clause quando il risultato è meno certo.

  • We'll miss the bus if we don't leave now.
  • Unless you hurry, you'll be late.
  • If Ravi had more free time, he could learn the guitar.
  • What would you do if you found a wallet in the street?
