Ketika kalimat diawali dengan negative or restrictive adverbial, yaitu keterangan negatif atau pembatas, kata kerja bantu pindah in front of the subject, seperti dalam kalimat tanya. Ini memberi kesan formal, dramatis, atau sastrawi dan umum dalam tulisan akademik serta pidato. Jika kata kerjanya tidak punya kata kerja bantu, tambahkan do, does or did. Inversi yang sama mengikuti so + adjective dan such + be ketika keduanya membuka klausa.
