Present simple for routines
Talk about daily routines, habits and facts with the present simple, including do, does, don't and doesn't.
We use the present simple for things that happen again and again: routines, habits and regular events. We also use it for facts, for example where people live or work.
| Subject | Positive | Negative | Question |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / you / we / they | They work at night. | They don't work at night. | Do they work at night? |
| he / she / it | She works at night. | She doesn't work at night. | Does she work at night? |
Spelling with he, she and it
Most verbs add -s: walk → walks, read → reads. Verbs that end in -ch, -sh, -s, -x or -o add -es: watch → watches, go → goes. When a verb ends in a consonant + y, change y to -ies: study → studies. The verb have is irregular: she has.
