Present perfect with ever and never
Talk about life experiences with have or has and a past participle, and ask questions with ever.
We use the present perfect to talk about experiences in our life up to now, when we don't say exactly when they happened. The form is have or has + past participle.
| Subject | Positive | Negative | Question |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / you / we / they | I've been to Egypt. | We haven't tried octopus. | Have they ever seen snow? |
| he / she / it | She's visited Peru. | He hasn't ridden a horse. | Has he ever flown in a plane? |
Past participles
For regular verbs, the past participle is the same as the past simple: visit → visited. Many common verbs are irregular.
| Verb | Past simple | Past participle |
|---|---|---|
| be | was / were | been |
| do | did | done |
| eat | ate | eaten |
| see | saw | seen |
| write | wrote | written |
| fly | flew | flown |
| ride | rode | ridden |
| swim | swam | swum |
| run | ran | run |
| meet | met | met |
Ever and never
Ever means at any time in your life. We use it mostly in questions. Never means not at any time. Both words go between have or has and the past participle. To talk about visiting a place, we usually say been to: I've been to Rome means I went there and came back.
- Have you ever eaten Korean food? Yes, I have.
- Jamal has never been on a plane.
- I've never seen the sea.
- Has Lena ever won a prize? No, she hasn't.
- We've visited three different countries.
