Soluzioni
- The village had waited so long for its bridge that, when it finally opened, nobody quite knew how to behave.“So long that” indica grado e risultato, con una proposizione inserita dopo “that”. “Quite” significa del tutto.
- A ribbon was cut, a band struggled through its anthem, and then an awkward silence settled over the crowd.“Anthem” si pronuncia AN-them, con la th di “think”. I tre eventi crescono fino al silenzio.
- It was an old woman, leaning on a stick, who stepped forward and crossed it without a word.Questa frase scissa ritarda il soggetto, “an old woman”. “Without a word” significa in silenzio.
- Halfway over, she stopped, glanced down at the river she had feared all her life, and began, quietly, to hum.“Halfway over” è una breve frase iniziale. “She had feared” è un past perfect: la paura veniva prima.
- Within minutes the whole village had followed her, as though the bridge had been waiting for a single brave footstep.“Within minutes” significa dopo pochi minuti soltanto. “As though” è seguito dal past perfect per una situazione immaginata.
