- The envelope had been forwarded twice before it finally reached him.“Had been forwarded” は受け身の過去完了形です。“reached him” では、“him” の h は弱くなります。
- He knew the careful handwriting at once.“Knew” は “new” のように聞こえ、k は発音されません。“At once” は「すぐに」という意味です。
- It was from the teacher who had encouraged him to study languages.“who had encouraged him” では、“had” は弱くなり、“him” は h が落ちます。
- She wrote that she had kept a copy of his first essay.“Had kept” は過去完了形です。“wrote” の t は、“that” の前ではほとんど聞こえません。
- He read the letter three times before he felt ready to reply.three は単語でも数字でも書けます。ここでの “read” は過去形で、“red” のように聞こえます。
