Answer key
- Hello Daniel, this is Sofia from the travel desk, calling about your flight to the conference.'This is Sofia' is how callers name themselves on the phone. 'Calling about' is short for 'I am calling about'.
- Unfortunately, bad weather has delayed the aircraft, and you will almost certainly miss your connecting train this evening.'Almost certainly' is a strong hedge. 'Aircraft' is stressed on the first syllable: AIR-craft.
- I have already reserved a seat on the first service tomorrow morning, which leaves shortly after seven.'Which leaves' adds information about the train. 'Already reserved' links as 'already-reserved'.
- The hotel near the station has also been informed, so please do not worry about the late arrival.'Has also been informed' is passive. 'Please do not worry' is a polite instruction.
- If these arrangements do not suit you, call me back and we will look for an alternative.'Suit you' often joins as 'soo-chew'. 'Call me back' means telephone me again. 'Alternative' is stressed on the second syllable.
