Describing trends and change

보고서나 그래프 설명처럼 시간에 따라 수치가 어떻게 변하는지 나타내는 동사, 부사, 형용사를 배웁니다.

보고서, 발표, 시험 과제에서는 시간이 지나면서 무언가가 어떻게 변했는지 설명하라는 요구가 자주 나옵니다. went up과 went down을 반복하는 대신, 변화가 얼마나 크거나 빨랐는지 보여 주는 부사나 형용사와 함께 정확한 동사를 사용할 수 있습니다.

rise동사
오르다; 더 높아지거나 커지다The number of cyclists in the city rose by 15% last year.
decline동사
줄어들다; 더 작아지거나 약해지거나 적어지다Sales of printed maps have declined steadily for a decade.
fluctuate동사
오르내리다; 여러 번 올랐다 내렸다 하다The price of fresh vegetables fluctuates with the seasons.
peak동사
정점에 이르다; 가장 높은 지점이나 수준에 도달하다Water use peaks in the early evening, when people cook and wash.
level off구동사
안정되다; 오르거나 내리는 것을 멈추고 거의 같은 수준을 유지하다After years of growth, membership has levelled off.
double동사
두 배가 되다; 두 배로 커지다The number of online students has doubled since the new course began.
steadily부사
꾸준히; 일정하고 고른 속도로The town's population has grown steadily for thirty years.
sharply부사
급격히; 갑자기 큰 폭으로Visitor numbers fell sharply after the bridge closed.
gradually부사
서서히; 오랜 기간에 걸쳐 천천히Temperatures gradually returned to normal.
significant형용사
상당한; 눈에 띌 만큼 크거나 중요한There was a significant drop in complaints after the change.
slight형용사
약간의; 작고 그다지 중요하지 않은There was a slight increase in prices in March.
trend명사
추세; 무언가가 변화하는 전반적인 방향There is a growing trend towards working from home.
  • Prices rose sharply in May. = There was a sharp rise in prices in May.
  • Attendance fell by 200 people. (by shows the amount of change)
  • Attendance fell to 1,800. (to shows the final level)
  • The number of members rose from 200 to 350.
