対比を表すつなぎ言葉は、2つの考えが一緒にあると意外であること、または互いに違うことを示します。意味は似ていますが、それぞれ異なる文法パターンに従い、ほとんどの間違いはそこで起こります。

Although と despite は、予想外の結果を表します。つまり、ある結果を予想するのに、別のことが起こります。Whereas と while は、異なる2つの事実を単に比べるだけで、意外さはありません。Even though は although より強い言い方です。Though はよりくだけた言い方で、文末にも置けます。The test was hard. I passed, though.
同じ意味でも文法は違う

- Despite the late hour, we went for a walk.
- Despite being tired, we went for a walk.
- It was late. However, we went for a walk.
- Lucas has a full-time job, whereas his brother is still at university.
