A Survey of Lesser Rivers, by Halvard Oyelaran: a review

Novels about maps tend to flatter themselves. They suggest that to chart a place is to understand it, and then spend four hundred pages complicating the suggestion. Halvard Oyelaran's second novel, A Survey of Lesser Rivers, is the rare example that knows the trap and walks into it with its eyes open, and it is a better book for the risk.

The story follows Edda Marsh, a government surveyor sent in the 1920s to measure the minor waterways of the fictional Vennet Basin, which the ministry's existing maps show as little more than blank paper with a few dotted lines. Edda is competent, reserved and faintly contemptuous of sentiment. Her local guide, a retired ferryman called Oskar Pell, is none of these things; he insists on telling her the names the villagers use for each bend and shallow, names she dutifully records in her notebook and, under pressure from her superiors, leaves off the final sheets.

It is here that the novel's quiet intelligence shows. Oyelaran never lets Edda become a villain, nor does he permit the reader the comfort of blaming a single decision. The omission is gradual, bureaucratic, almost polite: one name is judged too long for the scale of the map, another is thought to duplicate its neighbour, a third is simply difficult to spell. What emerges is not a story about cruelty but about how easily erasure can pass for tidiness.

The prose deserves much of the credit. Oyelaran writes in short, exact sentences that mimic the surveyor's habit of reducing the world to measurements, and the occasional departure from that restraint, such as a description of fog lifting from a reed bed, lands with unusual force. Not every stylistic choice succeeds, however. The middle third, in which Edda waits out a flood in a riverside inn, is unhurried to the point of inertia, and the half-dozen letters from her sister, intended as a counterweight to the fieldwork, read like exposition in disguise.

The ending will divide readers. Without giving too much away, I will say that it refuses the consolation that most such novels offer, in which a lost name is triumphantly restored. Instead we are left with a single image, and the suspicion that whatever Edda comes to feel about her work, she will not be the one to put it right. I found this bracing; a friend who read the book alongside me thought it evasive. Both reactions seem to me defensible.

A Survey of Lesser Rivers will not suit anyone who wants momentum, and it is hard to imagine it being adapted for the screen without losing the very patience that gives it value. But for readers prepared to meet it at its own pace, it offers something increasingly uncommon: a novel whose argument is carried almost entirely by its details, and which trusts us to notice.
