Sample answer: should schools teach practical life skills?
In many countries, school timetables are dominated by academic subjects such as mathematics, science and languages. Some people argue that schools should also teach practical skills, including cooking, basic repairs and managing money. I strongly agree with this view, provided that these skills complement academic subjects rather than replace them.
The main reason for my opinion is that such skills are essential for independent adult life. Young people who leave home without knowing how to prepare a simple meal often rely on expensive ready-made food, which can harm both their health and their budget. Similarly, someone who has never learnt to plan a monthly budget may easily get into debt. Since not every family has the time or knowledge to teach these things at home, school is the fairest place to ensure that every child learns them.
Furthermore, practical lessons can make academic knowledge more meaningful. Calculating the cost of ingredients for a class meal, for example, turns abstract percentages into something students can see and use. Students who struggle in traditional lessons may also discover that they are skilled with their hands, which can build their confidence in other subjects.
Admittedly, timetables are already full, and critics worry that new subjects would reduce the time available for exam preparation. However, practical skills do not require many hours: a single weekly lesson, or projects combined with existing subjects, would be enough to make a real difference.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that schools should teach practical life skills alongside academic subjects. Doing so would prepare young people for the realities of adult life and help them see the value of what they learn in the classroom.
